After I saw Billy Hart play in the Mwandishi Band, I had an epiphany, and I began to see the drum set as a circle, with the drummer as its fluid center—rooted within the architecture but sending out flares of sound beyond its physical boundary. This conception of the instrument renders it not so much a “set” of disparate elements with separate and determined roles, but as one seamless entity: a living, breathing being for rhythm, (of course), but also for melody, harmony, texture, and yes, narrative. In asking the listener to answer the questions posed by its divergent timbres and unknowable tones, the drum set can visit sonic countries beyond the reach of uniform sound and precise pitch.
I’ve been on the path to these worlds for quite a while now. Still have a ways to go.
For all the drummers, present and past, who through the sheer force of their art birthed, nurtured, and still nourish this magnificent machine.
