Still owing Gramavison a recording, Previte joined forces again with his Empty Suits band and recorded a work that was so different from the previous Empty Suits record (big surprise) that Gramavision refused to release it. This prompted his departure from the label. Eventually coming out in 1994 on DIW/Japan, “Slay the Suitors,” (title courtesy of a chapter in Homer’s “Odyssey”) is in many ways his “underground” record, perhaps the most obscure of them all, if you don’t count “Pull To Open.” A hazy, sometimes quiet, very electronic outing (confirming Previte’s fascination with electronic music in earnest) this CD is imported and extremely rare. Downbeat said, “Previte introduces a brilliant device: a reverberating Hammond chord that backs the soloists for an entire five and a half minute segment. The tension produced by that act alone is a study in seduction.” Try, just try and find this record.

about

SLAY THE SUITORS (title taken from the ODYSSEY) was supposed to be Previte's 5th Gramavision release of a 5 record deal but when presented with the music, only four long tunes for the entire record, Gramavision balked. Avant stepped up and released the record in 1994.

"On the whole, Slay the Suitors is a shake-up, wake-up call to arms in which Bobby Previte faults classicism for not only stifling the artistic impulse, but also for running hand-in-hand with deeply entrenched, even violent forces of oppression. With this theme to guide him on Slay the Suitors, Previte is absolutely at his most uncompromising, and the resulting music -- like the CD cover -- is right on target" - All Music Guide
